Getting around · PRACTICAL GUIDE
Get around Shanghai with confidence
In this guide
Plan the next journey before leaving reliable internet. Start with the nearest station and your destination's Chinese address, rather than trying to memorize the whole transport network.
A merchant payment QR code and a metro transport code are different. Set up or buy the correct ticket.
Take the metro
Shanghai's official metro guide describes single-journey tickets and mobile transport codes. If using an app, open its transport feature and select Shanghai; your normal shop-payment code is not the same thing.
Use a ticket machine or ask the staffed service center if you cannot get the app working. Follow the signs for the line, direction and interchange, then use the same ticket or transport method to exit.
Check the route's last train before staying out late. A transfer may finish earlier than the line you first board.
Keep the last walk manageable
Choose the exit closest to your destination and check whether you need stairs with luggage. Save a screenshot of the route and destination in Chinese. For a complicated journey, write down the interchange and the destination station so you can show them to staff.
Taxi and booked rides
For a street or airport taxi, use the official queue or a licensed vehicle, show the Chinese destination and keep a receipt. For an app booking, check the plate, pickup point and car details against the booking before boarding.
If your payment app or data connection fails, ask staff for help arranging transport and use your backup payment option. Do not let a low battery leave you without your hotel address.
Build your first day's route
- Save your accommodation and nearest station.
- Plan one destination and the way back.
- Check the last connection and a taxi backup.
- Carry a power bank and the Chinese address.
